Temporary Works Supervisor Online Course

This Temporary Works online course aims to give delegates the understanding of the need for Temporary Works Supervisors and what their duties will be. The Temporary Works Supervisor online course explains the role and the overall management context within which it sits. This CITB approved course is designed for anyone involved in temporary works.

The course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competency (the '4Cs'), risk management, safety and business relations.

Risk management of temporary works
The background to temporary works Codes of Practice and relevant regulations
The need for a temporary works policy and procedure
The roles and responsibilities of the Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS)
The roles of others involved in temporary works projects
An understanding of the relevant aspects of BS5975

This is because high risk can occur on small as well as larger sites hence understanding the essentials of good safety risk management, as outlined in BS5975, is relevant for projects of all sizes.  The course runs for one day with a 30 minute Microsoft Forms ‘open book’ test, consisting of 25 multiple choice questions  - 72% pass rate, means if you answer 18 or more correct you will have a pass.

What are Temporary Works?

Temporary works are the parts of a construction project that are needed to enable the permanent works to be built. Usually the TW are removed after use – e.g. access scaffolds, props, shoring, excavation support, falsework and formwork, etc. Sometimes Temporary works are incorporated into the permanent works, such as crane or piling platforms used for road foundations.  Like permanent works, they require the same level of safety and attention to detail.

Temporary works are usually safety and business-critical and require careful co-ordination. An accepted way of achieving this is through the adoption of the management process outlined in BS5975 which introduces the Temporary Works Supervisor as a key figure.

What is a Temporary Works Supervisor?

A Temporary Works Supervisor reports to the Temporary Works Coordinator. They will work together to check and supervise the temporary work and ensure they meet the safety requirements.

A Temporary Works Supervisor will usually be appointed on larger sites or if they are working with a coordinator who has the responsibility for several sites at once. The supervisor will have responsibility and focus on their particular temporary works.

While there is no legal requirement to have a Temporary Works Coordinator or supervisor on site, it is required that those in control of a project are ensuring the work is carried out in a way that does not cause risk or harm to the workers or members of the public.

Who is the Temporary Works Supervisor course for?

All those considered for appointment as Temporary Works Coordinators or Temporary Works Supervisors. This course may also be of interest to others involved in the Temporary Works Coordination process. These may include:

Site and Project Managers
Designers and Supervisors working for clients
Consultants and Contractors who need a detailed awareness of the safety and technical implications of temporary works

Temporary Works Supervisor Certification is valid for 5 years

To remain certified as a Temporary Works Supervisor, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.
