SSSTS Delegate, Course & Exam Criteria

January 2018 CITB released significant changes to the Site Safety Plus courses and Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E). These CITB changes impact the delegate requirements, course standards and exam criteria for the RISK SSSTS Guaranteed Pass Scheme in three core areas:

#1 - CITB Pre-course SSSTS Delegate Assessment Criteria

SSSTS delegates must have the...

...to ensure they are competent to attend and complete the SSSTS course.

CITB request the Approved Training Organisation (ATO) conduct a pre-assessment of the delegate.

The criteria for this is set out above, however, as many delegates are booked directly on to courses via a training manager, it's difficult to control or apply fairly and consistently pre-course.

RISK have developed a process which incorporates an initial induction paper which acts to perform the ‘pre-course’ assessment and highlight the relevant details of the RISK SSSTS Guaranteed Pass Scheme. It includes the specific criteria of the SSSTS course and what’s expected of the delegate in relation to learning the materials; together with T&C’s of the RISK SSSTS Guaranteed Pass Scheme – all clearly set out within this short pre-course induction. However, the greatest impact is in the number of times a delegate can attempt to re-sit the whole course whilst still being deemed to meet the CITB Pre-course SSSTS Delegate Assessment Criteria.

Three Strikes Rule

RISK believe if a delegate has had three re-takes of the whole SSSTS course - and upto six failures - it is fair to assume they are not suitable or do not meet the CITB delegate standard specified for this course.

Just to be 100% clear on this matter - here's how the Three Strikes Rule works:

The Original SSSTS Course is taken and the delegate fails the exam for a first time - Strike #1

Delegate offered an immediate FREE re-sit* with a different exam paper on the same day or chooses to attend a re-sit within 90 days of their original exam, at a cost of £50.00+vat should the delegate fail a second time.

Strike #2 - Delegate re-sits the full five day course and fails a third time (£50.00+vat for exam and administration)

Delegate offered an immediate FREE re-sit* with a different exam paper on the same day or chooses to attend a re-sit within 90 days of their 'Strike #2 -exam', at a cost of £50.00+vat should the delegate fail a fourth time.

Strike #3 - Delegate re-sits the full five day course and fails a fifth time (£50.00+vat for exam and administration)

Delegate offered an immediate FREE re-sit* with a different exam paper on the same day or chooses to attend a re-sit within 90 days of their 'Strike #3 -exam', at a cost of £50.00+vat should the delegate fail a sixth time.

*A resit is only offered if delegate has failed initial exam but achieved 67% or greater.

Please Note: The re-sits must all take place within a 12 month period of the original SSSTS course exam taken. The Guaranteed Pass Scheme becomes invalid upon the 1 year anniversary of the original SSSTS course taken.

#2 - CITB SSSTS Course Requirements

#3 - CITB SSSTS Exam Requirements

Delegates are allocated 30 minutes to complete the exam, consisting of:

Immediately upon completion of the SSSTS exam, the RISK tutor marks all the delegates exam papers. If a delegate wishes to take up the CITB offer of an immediate 're-sit' FREE (with a different exam paper), they will be requested to wait for their mark and if they should have failed - they will be able to re-sit the exam that same afternoon.

If the delegate fails twice, or fails to complete their re-sit within 90 days of their original exam date, they will need to re-take the whole SSSTS course. Failure to re-sit within 90 days of their original exam date, the RISK SSSTS Guaranteed Pass Scheme will become invalid.
